Etymology:
The name originates from the Ancient Greek a-methystos (“not intoxicated”). In antiquity, amethyst was believed to possess prophylactic properties against the effects of alcohol. Consequently, drinking vessels were often carved from the stone. Historical accounts suggest that these goblets were sometimes used to mask the dilution of wine with water, as the vessel’s color disguised the change in the wine’s concentration, perpetuating the myth that the stone itself prevented intoxication.
Geochemistry and Coloration:
Amethyst is a variety of quartz whose violet-to-purple coloration is attributed to gamma irradiation (Berthelot, 1906) and the presence of trace iron within the crystal lattice (Holden, 1925). The ionizing radiation triggers an electronic transition in iron atoms () substituting for in the lattice, resulting in the formation of color centers, specifically the complex (Lehmann and Moore, 1966). Despite the intensity of the coloration, the iron content occupying silicon sites is relatively low, typically ranging between 10 and 100 ppm (Dennen and Puckett, 1972).
Morphology and Zoning:
Amethyst distribution within single crystals is frequently non-uniform. In amethyst geodes, the color intensity is generally higher in zones underlying the rhombohedral faces (the tips). In some instances, this zoning is more pronounced under the r or z rhombohedral surfaces, creating a “gear-like” appearance when viewed along the c-axis. In prismatic crystals, color may appear in faint, phantom-like layers. In skeletal and scepter quartz specimens, the color is typically concentrated along the edges, often occurring in association with smoky quartz zones.
