1. Coral (Corallium)


Description: Coral is a calcareous structure secreted by marine polyps. Over extended periods, these colonies accumulate skeletons, eventually forming extensive reef systems. While available in various hues—including red, pink, white, and black—red coral is historically the most prized in traditional jewelry.



  • Properties: Biogenic and marine origin; relatively low Mohs hardness; sensitive to thermal stress, acids, and common chemicals.

2. Amber

3. Shell (Nacreous Structures)

When an irritant or foreign body enters the mantle, the organism secretes concentric layers of nacre (calcium carbonate and concretionary protein) to encapsulate the irritant, gradually forming the pearl.



  • Properties: Biological/marine origin; typically spherical or ovoid; characteristic luster (orient); color spectrum ranges from white and cream to pink, silver, and dark hues.
