Quartz | Etymology and Historical Significance


Quartz has been known and valued since prehistoric times. The earliest recorded name, krystallos (κρύσταλλος), was given by Theophrastus around 300–325 BC. Ancient names such as “rock crystal” and “crystal leaf” (German: Kristall und Blattkrystall) preserved its ancient usage. The etymology of krystallos itself stems from Greek krystallos, meaning “ice, frost,” derived from kryo, “cold.” This reflects the ancient belief that crystal was permanent, solid ice.


The first printed use of the word “querz” appeared anonymously in 1505 but is attributed to Ulrich Rulpin von Calbe (known as Rulpin von Calbe, 1527), a physician in Freiberg, Germany. Agricola used the spelling “quarzum” (Agricola, 1530) as well as “querze,” but he also referenced “crystallum,” “silicum,” “silex,” and silice.


A proposed etymology by Tomkeieff (1941) suggests that Saxon miners referred to large veins as Gänge and intersecting, thread-like veins as Querklüfte. The term Erz (ore) was applied to metallic minerals, gangue, or vein material in general. In the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), silver ore is often found in small, intersecting veins composed of silica. These were potentially called “Querküftetz” (cross-vein ore) by the Saxon miners. This colloquial term could easily have been shortened to “Querertz,” then to “Quertz,” and finally evolved into “Quarz” in German, “Quarzum” in Latin, and “Quartz” in English. Tomkeieff noted that “Quarz,” in its various spellings, was not adopted by other prominent contemporary writers. “Quarz” has been used in later literature to refer to the Saxon mining region but has rarely been applied elsewhere.
