Statues of the Geologist and Mother Earth
When it came to selecting statues or artistic items for the museum park—given the vast spaces available—many diverse opinions were expressed during the museum park’s working group meetings. Ultimately, it was decided that several sculptural installations and a few wall panels would be included.
Sculptors were invited to submit their designs according to the museum’s vision. After interviews and evaluations, Mr. Barmak Alikhani was chosen to carry out the projects. Among his proposed designs, two received the greatest support: the Geologist and Mother Earth. Planning for their construction began in early 2018 (1397 in the Iranian calendar). The statues were created in Mashhad, assembled in several parts at the museum site, and finally painted and retouched after installation.
The Geologist Statue, standing three meters tall, is a classical-style sculpture. It was designed with details such as the tools of a geologist—including a hammer and fieldwork clothing—depicting the act of sampling in the field. The statue’s facial features were inspired by multiple portraits of veteran Iranian geologists, symbolizing the strength and precision of a professional in the discipline. The design of the backdrop and pedestal incorporates elements inspired by the natural sciences of geology.
The Bust of Mother Earth employs a symbolic design. On one side, it portrays a mother lovingly embracing her child—the Earth—while on the other side, the spherical shape of the globe represents the planet’s outer layers. The crown surrounding the bust is decorated with motifs of stars and the primordial creation of the Earth. At the base of the bust, a plaque is installed inscribed with a famous verse by the great Persian poet Ferdowsi of Tus about the creation of the world.
