Land Subsidence
This phenomenon can result from natural processes, human activities, or a combination of both. The subsidence currently affecting our country is primarily induced by human activities, particularly the excessive extraction of groundwater. When aquifers are depleted, water between soil particles is removed, causing soil compaction. This leads to the formation of cracks and fissures in agricultural lands, damage to infrastructure and power transmission lines, alterations in land drainage systems, and deterioration of historical structures. The land subsidence situation in Khorasan Razavi Province is critical due to drought and mismanagement of groundwater resources. In this image, you can observe the protrusion of concrete wellhead equipment resulting from land subsidence and the lowering of the ground surface.
